Backslide is maybe the most straightforward song of the collection. Alicia initially wrote it on acoustic guitar, and the verse changes were more complex and syncopated in the early drafts. As we started demoing it out, we discovered the melody was more engaging in a simpler setting, and we used atmosphere to shift the mood throughout the verses. We liked the dynamic effect of quieter choruses, leaving the bridge and final chorus as the payoff moments.

Lyrically, this song is about losing touch with a loved one, particularly in the darkness and miasma of misinformation that affected so many this past year. We think it's important to find the micro-moments where there’s still common ground and connection, if for no other reason than to provide a tether to a common understanding.
